Number 5 – David BowieThe Next Day

Five days left in 2013 which means the Top 5 albums of 2013 start today. At Number Five on the 31 Days of Music: Best of 2013 is one of my all-time favorite artists David Bowie with his latest record The Next Day.

For about 50 years Mr. Bowie has been treating music listeners to some of the best records out there. In addition to his music being so good it is his determination to do things differently with each record that has been a major factor in his longevity. Never afraid to push the envelope or step away from the norm has resulted in a wealth of music that very rarely misses the mark. Once again Bowie does it his way with the surprising release of The Next Day. With almost 10 since his last release, Bowie and a few confidants secretly recorded the album and then sprang it on the record company and the music listening public. I don’t know how they pulled it all off, but what I do know is that the album is damn good.

Bowie doesn’t try to recreate his past nor explore new sounds or techniques; he just quietly wrote and recorded a batch of tunes that is distinctly David Bowie. With The Next Day caution has been thrown to the wind as Bowie and band attack the music proving that you are never too old to rock. He wastes no time opening things up with the title track belting out “here I am, not quite dying” over top a sonic collection of guitars, horns and drums. The album is at its best on songs like “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” and “I’d Rather Be High” which offer up some nice guitar licks as Bowie sounds like he is still in his 30’s. Bowie takes things in a different direction with the chaotic “Dirty Boys”. Built around a deep and angry saxophone, this chunky song sounds almost like something Tom Waits would have written. If you happen to pick up the 'extra' version of the record (which you should) then you get to expose your ears to “I’ll Take You There”. This tasty treat explodes out of your stereo with whining guitars and pounding beats, it is Bowie at his best.

When artists start aging they either make the necessary adjustments to keep their music fresh or they get old and stale, Bowie is far from being stale. The music on The Next Day will grab you by the ears and make you not want to quit listening as Mr. Bowie has once again invited listeners into his musical world and once again everything has been rearranged. This record is a great addition to his storied collection that will have Bowie fans overjoyed while introducing a new group of music fans to his music.
