Number 11 - Deathfix - Self-titled

Reeking of the 1970’s with tunes that sound like they have been pulled out of Bowie’s or Bolan’s back catalog, this record has been one of my favorite listens all year long. That is why I have Deathfix’s self-titled debut at Number 11 on the 31 Days of Music: Best of 2013.

Deathfix was born from the brains of Brendan Canty (Fugazi, Rites of Spring) and Rich Morel (Morel, Blowoff) after meeting while playing for Bob Mould. With a musical background that had its differences they both had a fondness for classic rock, especially that of the “glam” variety (think Bowie, Reed, Ronson, Bolan). With a rhythm section assembled a self-titled debut album was recorded full of chunky rock rhythms and melodic pop undertones that is a modern take on classic rock.

Biting guitars slash into the listener’s ears on the opening track “Better Than Bad” signaling that rock is indeed NOT dead. As you travel further into the tune the pop infused melodies and vocal harmonies really carry the track as they sing about a relationship that isn’t all that great. Singing about women’s control over men, “Mind Control” delivers spacey rhythms as they delve into a Pink Floydish area. Things go every which way on the funky “Dali’s House” driven by deep rhythms and a whining guitar as they roll through famous people’s houses they want to hang out at. The lyrics are great on this song naming everyone from David Bowie, to Kanye West, to Louis CK, to Scritti Politti. They close the record with "Transmission", an epic 8+ minute track that is a roller coaster ride through all that is good with Deathfix’s music. It begins mellow and engaging before mesmerizing listeners with guitar licks and spacey melodies then exploding into a mass of musical energy and quickly fading into nothingness.

Deathfix has put out a record that feels comfortable when you listen to it while also creating the excitement you get from new music. It is only 7 tracks long but they pack a hell of a lot of good music in that package. Each song is part of a journey the band takes you on locking you in for and keeping you there within their soundscape. If you have not experienced Deathfix, I suggest you do.
