Number 14 - Doc Feldman & the LD50 - Sundowning at the Station

The 31 Days of Music keeps getting smaller and smaller as we cross into the final 15 closing quickly on the top 10. Doc Feldman & the LD50 enter the countdown with their latest release.

Utilizing sparse melodies and haunting rhythms, Doc Feldman & the LD50 have delivered an album of songs loaded with darkness and despair. While there is nothing upbeat or happy about Sundowning At The Station the songs are brilliantly written and infectious. With each listen Doc’s impassionate lyrics draw the listener into his world with songs about life, death and broken dreams.

Listening to the songs on this record is an emotional commitment. As he sings about losing someone or questioning life Feldman picks and chooses all the right words using them to paint brilliantly vivid mental pictures in the brains of all those folks that hit play. The haunting “Alive For Now” sets the stage with a static filled intro as Doc sing about taking life’s punches and still being alive, barely. With lines like “I’m alive, no thanks to you” or “disease is a south bound train, and it waits for no man” the song keeps you wondering what took him to the brink of death, a woman, booze, illness or all the above. He harnesses the ghosts of Southern bluesmen sitting on their rickety porch strumming their guitar and moaning their sorrows with the track “I Can’t Quit You”. His guitar drones on with intermittent whining from a harmonica as he wails about the woman he is addicted to. An interesting addition to the record comes about mid way through. The track “Pinecone Drone (An Interlude)” bears little resemblance to the rest of the album and I think that is what makes it work so well. It is an equal mix of banjo, space ship noises and guitar shredding that makes up this short but sweet track. From start to finish there are no weak spots on this album.

Sundowning At The Station is one hell of a listen. Each track brings something different to the record whether lyrically or sonically. The music is quite minimal and that is what works as Doc sings his heart out. It is his voice and words that carry this record and with each listen it just keeps getting better.
