Number 15 – EscondidoThe Ghost of Escondido

As 31 Days of Music: Best of 2013 starts rolling downhill towards the finish line I present to you Number 15, the mesmerizing music of Escondido and their album The Ghost of Escondido.

Hailing from Nashville, Escondido has managed to put together a debut album like no other. The songs are built around Jessica Marcos’ haunting vocals as she sings about love, longing and heartbreak. Supporting her sultry voice Tyler James rummages through every dark corner and brings sounds you normally wouldn’t think could be paired. Melodic acoustics, grinding guitars, spacey rhythms and Spanish horns all find their ways throughout this record and James manipulates them all to create the perfect sounds.

The album begins humbly with the mellow guitar on “Evil Girls” that rolls in like a slow moving fog before turning into something out of a Clint Eastwood movie (trust me it works). When Marcos begins singing to stay away from evil girls you are hooked. More horns set the stage for “Rodeo Queen” a song that oozes sexuality as it takes the listener through a tale about the ups and downs of a being involved with a rodeo star. Keeping from being a one trick pony they infuse some sweet guitar riffs on tracks like “Bad Without You” and “Keep Walkin’”. The horns are absent on these fuzzy tracks that bring out the rock in the duo.

The Ghost of Escondido is a magnificent musical journey from start to finish. Each track creates a different combination of sounds that are tied together by Marcos’ vocals. James is a musical madman as he arranges the concoction of sounds beautifully. He also provides very unimposing background vocals, almost as if there is a ghost singing along with Marcos. Once you hit play on this sweet piece of music it will be very hard to turn it off.
