Number 18 - Devon Allman - Turquoise

If you dig Southern blues loaded with a mess of bad ass guitar playing then you definitely will like the next installment of the 31 Days of Music: Best of 2013.

Stepping out on his own, Devon Allman has delivered the record we all have been waiting for. Being the son of Gregg Allman has to be a blessing as well as a curse and while most have wanted a clone of the father, Devon has always done things his way. His band Honeytribe had a Southern blues feel to it, but the music was infused with jazzy undertones and on occasion the music veered into a harder rock zone. He plays a major role in the Royal Southern Brotherhood, sharing time with a collection of top musicians as they reeled out tunes full of Southern funk, blues and jazz. Both projects were group efforts so a lot of cooks were in the kitchen, now we get to hear what Allman can do on his own.

Turquoise is an eleven song collection of tunes anchored by Allman’s booming vocals and chock full of bluesy swagger and sweet Southern soul. “When I Left Home” and “Don’t Set Me Free” are the one-two punch that draws the listeners into his musical world. From this point you are hooked and are fully committed to venturing along Allman's musical voyage. Offering up a swampy feel are the tracks “Homesick” and “There’s No Time” then there is the soulful “Strategy” & “Key Lime Pie” that showcase Allman’s musical diversity. For fun he adds in a killer cover of “Stop Draggin My Heart Around” with Samantha Fish joining in on vocals.

From start to finish Turquoise is a great listen. There are no bad songs on the record so listening to it all the way through is something you are going to want to do. Sit back and be mesmerized by the sweet guitar licks and smooth rhythms then let Allman’s voice infiltrate your ears, you will not be disappointed. This is the record everybody has wanted to hear from Mr. Allman, let’s hope there I s much more to come.
