Number 20 - Tedo Stone - Good Go Bad
Here you go music fans, the next album on the 31 Days of Music: Best of 2013 at Number 20 is (drum roll please) Tedo Stone, Good Go Bad. A mighty fine record from a talented individual. Don't forget to listen to all this great music on the AME's 31 Days of Music: Best of 2013 Spotify playlist.
When Tedo Stone released his debut EP – Happy – I couldn’t get enough of it. The Atlanta/Athens musician perfectly blended spacey guitars, psychedelic fuzz and Byrds era country rock into one unique sound. Employing a dogged work ethic Stone built up quite a following through live shows, the internet and word of mouth. Once you heard the EP you had to see a live show and once you heard Tedo live it made the EP that much better. The past year has seen him team up with This Is American Music which has been a big part of his explosion in popularity, well that and the fact his music is so damn good.
Building off of the strength of Happy, Tedo Stone has assembled a killer band and unleashed his first full length record Good Go Bad (GGB). Loaded with everything that was good about the EP, the songs are a bit more experimental and mature than Happy. Stone and crew create a musical landscape that draws listeners into the record and makes them not want to leave. They are engulfed by mind-bending melodies and mellow rhythms that frame Stone’s unique voice.
From start to finish there are no bad songs on GGB. Each tune stands alone as a powerful single but when you play them all together they become so much more. Highlighting the record is the upbeat “Big As The Ocean”, the sparse “Circles” and the title track “Good Go Bad”. My personal favorite is the epic “War”. The 5+ minute opus is built around a piano then reinforced with booming rhythms and a few vicious guitar riffs. It is a cornucopia of sounds and textures creating music you can almost feel.
Instead of sitting on his ass and rehashing Happy, Stone has evolved as a songwriter showing he is not afraid to make slight changes, tweak things here or there and experiment for the sake of his music. Give Good Go Bad a listen, and you too will be glad you made it a part of your record collection
