Number 21 - Patrick Sweany - Close To the Floor

More blues music for the 31 Days of Music: Best of 2013. As the list becomes smaller it is time to unveil Patrick Sweany's Close To The Floor as Number 21.

With an emotion packed gravely wail and a smooth and nasty guitar Patrick Sweany has unleashed an album full of music drenched in blood, sweat and tears. With many blues musicians it is either their guitar playing or their voice that dominates the music; in Sweany’s case they work symbiotically to create a soulful sound that cradles his lyrics allowing them to be the focus. It is this consummate relationship that makes his records candy for your ears and soul.

On his latest batch of tunes, Close To The Floor, Sweany has reached deep into his hat of songwriting tricks and presented the listener with ten tracks that touch on life, spirituality and being a musician. “I’m ashamed of my life cause my wife’s gotta keep that job” introduces the listener to the first track on the record, “Working For You”. It is a smoldering tune about a musician’s love/hate relationship with being a musician. He hates the fact he is working so hard for so little and questions whether he should be “in an office hatin’ life and drinkin’ coffee” instead of out on the road. Life is full of ups and downs and the song “Bus Station” delves into the downside as he paints a vivid picture of a depressing bus station that is the last place anyone wants to be. Everyone has a reason for ending up at the bus station and most are just trying to escape something. One of the best songs on the record is “It’s Spiritual” which is also one of the most soulful. Tinged with a bit of gospel flavor he sings of a man that keeps making poor choices as he wrestles with his spiritual beliefs.

This album has a little bit of everything, from the raw blues of “Every Night Every Day” where Sweany wails from the deepest pits of his being, to the soulful southern music of “Slippin’” which harnesses the sounds of classic soul singers to the rocking “Every Gun” delivered with a powerful fuzz filled guitar. The music is more than just something to listen to; Sweany draws listeners into his songs welcoming us as a part of his musical world. From start to finish Closer To The Floor has no weakness as Sweany shows why he is one of the best songwriters that most folks have never heard of.
