Number 22 - Hymn For Her - Lucy & Wayne's Smokin' Hot Flames

Anyone ready for some more music? Up next on the 31 Days of Music: Best of 2013 is a duo that plays it loud and fast, Hymn For Her.

Some musicians think the more complex a song is or the greater the number of instruments there are on a song the better it is. Well, bigger is not always better, and if you don’t believe me then check out the new record from Hymn For Her (H4H), Lucy & Wayne’s Smokin’ Flames, and you will see what I mean. The charismatic duo roam this great land calling home wherever they park their airstream with their instruments, recording studio and family in tow as they bring killer music to all who want to listen. They have perfected the art of less is more delivering loud and boisterous tunes that are full of blues infused country rock.

From start to finish this record flat out rocks. Swapping their home recording studio for sweet digs in Detroit, the duo plastered Smokin’ Flames with chunky licks from Lucy’s bad ass cigar box guitar and pounding rhythms from Wayne’s thunderous drumming. There is a lot of noise coming from these two folks. With “Mojave” they kick the album off wide open. Pounding drums grabs the listener drawing them into the record and preparing them for what is to come. On “Glistening Cowgirl” they delve into the world of honky tonk and sprinkle it with a raw bluesy sound. While the album is fun and entertaining they tackle the environment on “Trash The Sun” and social issues with their rapid fire punk infused ode to Rosa Parks, “Rosa Parks Blvd.”. There are two songs on the record that are different yet both demonstrate how good their music is. On “Lucy Fur” the duo pounds out funky rhythms with punk undertones as they growl about Lucifer’s daughter. This tune boasts a big raw sound that is Hymn For Her. With “Ivy Pacheko” they take you on a ride through sonic peaks and valleys as they sing about a 10 year old girl who drowned as did her mom and grandmother when they tried to save her. The tune builds as Lucy tells their tale before exploding into an angry howl, very powerful.

Lucy & Wayne’s Smokin’ Flames is one of those albums that you will not be able to stop listening to, I am going on 2 weeks straight. The music and lyrics invade your brain, takes hold and doesn’t want to leave. From start to finish every track is a good song and once you hit play you will be sucked into their music world and never want to leave.
