The mayor of New York may be sounding the alarm about the dangers of salt and trans fats, but New Yorkers aren't buying it. What they are buying—and in grand abundance—is the salty, porky goodness of pit-roasted barbecue, which is hotter these days than the scorching temperatures out on the sidewalks of midtown Manhattan. Last month brought the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party to Madison Square Park, and August holds the smoky promise of the Big Aspen Barbecue Block Party.
In between, on July 11, expect to see smoke signals rising from Governors Island in the middle of New York Harbor as the Meatopia BBQ NYC extravaganza kicks into gear. For the first time since its inception, the cookout, which brings together chefs from near and far plus hundreds of pounds of heritage meats, will be open to the public.
This year's roster of cooks will include Chris Hart, of I-Que, in Lynchburg, Tennessee; Seamus Mullen, of Boqueria; Jonathan Waxman, of Barbuto; and Robbie Richter, of Fatty ’Cue.
Barbecue demands beer. Sixpoint Craft Ales plans
to meet that challenge by unveiling a custom smoked brew for the event.
Tickets range from $25 (for three tastings) to $150 (for twelve tastings), with two grades in between, priced at $45 and $85. Through the remainder of today, you can save 30 percent off the price of the upper three tiers of ticketS through a deal at Black Board Eats NY.
Meanwhile, back on the Big(ger) Island, the following weekend—July 17 and 18—will mark the "inaugural" 'Tastes of the Lower East Side' food festival (not to be confused with the event of the same name, which occurred in April, nor with the "Taste of 7th Street" food festival held last February or the "Tastes of the Village: East" food festival also held in April).
Participating vendors will include pork bun purveyor BaoHaus, meat pie specialist Tuck Shop, the veteran Yonah Schimmel (to provide knishes, and presumably hugs) the bakery Panade (on hand with cream puffs, both savory and sweet), and Stuffed Artisan Cannolis.
Tickets, which are $32, are available for $18 at The Dealist through July 14. The arrangement saves you 45 percent off the regular price.
