It's 30 days till the celebration of a world wide event called Earth Hour. Earth Hour, which falls on March 23rd, 2013 this year, is an hour long event that is recognized world wide in an effort to reduce the use of power and help reduce the effects of climate change.
Earth Hour was started by the World Wildlife Federation (WWF) in 2007 in Sydney, Australia and is still practiced to this day by the residents of Sydney and others world wide. The event didn't go international from Sydney till 2008 the following year. My family has been practicing Earth Hour since 2009 here in the United States along with 96 other countries and 6 continents that participated along with us that same year.
The benefits of Earth Hour is the propose of lessening the use of electricity by shutting off your household lights for a solid hour and reducing the impact of climate change on the planet. The lights off campaign has been labelled as a great event for the planet and now has celebrity endorsements and government appreciation, as well.
Many skeptics claim that climate change is a normal occurrence that takes place on the planet at a normal rate. Although there has been many facts backing that some amount of climate change is normal, there's been documented changes that are well above what the normal rate should be throughout history on planet earth. Climate Change is caused by a rise in greenhouse gas emissions and humans are the main reason these changes have occurred
With humans being the main cause of these changes, every little bit helps. Turning off the lights for one hour every year during Earth Hour has been shown to help with these changes and reduce the burden we are creating on the planet.
To celebrate Earth Hour this year all you have to do is, turn off all the nonessential lights within your home or office on Saturday, March 23rd, 2013, from 8:30 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. your local time. Look for ways to have an Earth Hour party, or gathering within your community and get the world out to friends and family to help with the efforts as well.
In an effort to do our part in my home, we not only turn off the nonessential lights, we shut down the main breaker in our home completely. We celebrate with Earth Hour games and enjoy our efforts by candle light. It's one of the most important dates in our year-to-year dates and we hope you will take an hour and participate.
