An innovative 30-day intervention program in healthy nutrition is starting in Sacramento aimed at low-income families, and volunteers are needed. The Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services is an international nonprofit group. Check out the site, EarthSave - Food intervention programs to achieve health independence. The Meals for Health program provides healthy food, education and support services for free to promote better nutrition for needy families. Also check out the April 10, 2011 Sacramento Bee article by Cynthia Hubert, "Food 'intervention' program starts in Sacramento."
The local effort, launched on April 8, 2011, is a pilot project by EarthSave International. EarthSave and Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services are joining together to create an innovative pilot program. Meals for Health is a 30-day intervention program where low-income people are taught to eat a healthy plant-based diet. John McDougall MD, Rip Esselstyn, Jeff Novick RD and many other plant-based health professionals are joining in this ground-breaking project.
Matthew Lederman, MD, and Alona Pulde, MD, will provide medical care for participants. A major university will be collecting the data for this program, and EarthSave plans to roll out Meals for Health nationally.
How would you like to volunteer to help? If you're in the Sacramento area and would like to help in this pilot program, contact Meals for Health at FoodBank@earthsave.org. Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services will select clients who suffer from serious health problems for the program. Clients will learn about nutrition, shopping for healthy foods, easy meal preparation and exercise options. To learn more about Meals for Health, check out the Earthsave.org website.
