Three U.S. Soccer referees from the Professional Referee Organization (PRO) were selected this week to officiate at 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Referee Mark Geiger and assistant referee Sean Hurd, and assistant referee reserve Eric Boria have been honored with the invitation to officiate at 2014 World Cup, which kicks off in mid-June.

Also representing the PRO is Canada's Joe Fletcher as an assistant referee.

Nine referees (three referees and six assistant referees) and four support referees (two referees and two ARs) have been selected out of the CONCACAF region for this year's World Cup. In total, there are 75 referees and 16 support referees selected for World Cup by the FIFA Referee Committee.

"PRO's support team is delighted for Mark, Sean, Joe and Eric, but also for all of our officials, too," PRO General Manager Peter Walton said. "This reflects the very high standard of officiating we have within our ranks."

The 39-year-old Geiger, a New Jersey native, will participate in his first men's World Cup after previously working at the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia. Geiger was the 2011 Major League Soccer Referee of the Year and will become the first American referee to work a World Cup match since Brian Hall in 2002.

Hurd, 42, joined Geiger for the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup and traveled to London for the 2012 Olympics. The Florida native is heading to his first FIFA World Cup this summer.

The 39-year-old Boria of Chicago worked as an assistant referee at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates from Oct. 17-Nov. 8.

Geiger, Hurd and Fletcher also were selected for the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco.
