3 tips for long distance friendships

Oftentimes, long distance friendships are overshadowed by their more troubling cousin, the long distance relationship. Even though long distance friendships are a lot less heartbreaking, they are still at risk of falling apart. If you love your friends from college or high school but are forced to move away, do not let your friendships falter. Instead, follow these 3 tips for maintaining your long distance friendships:

  1. Get inspired by the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie and get a traveling keepsake for your own group of friends. It could be a bracelet, necklace, shirt or even a pair of pants, if you’re lucky. To make it even more special, pick an item from a place your entire group of friends visited together such as a traveling keychain from the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz. Keep the item for a designated amount of time and mail it off to the next person with a letter.
  2. Convince your group of friends to invest in webcams and open a Google+ account. Add all of your friends to your circle and create a Hangout where you can all video chat together. Hangout as often as you and your friends have time.
  3. Regardless of which city, state, or country you are in, make a vow to get together with your long distance friends once a year, if not more. Pick a spot (this may take some discussion), organize places to sleep, and have a reunion. Face to face interaction is the most important factor in reconnecting in any kind of relationship.

Whether your friends are in a different city, state, or country, do not lose touch on some of the most valuable connections you have fostered. Even though the discussion of long distance friendships is lost among the sea of long distance loves, these important relationships should not be overlooked or forgotten.
