According to a report published by CNN on Oct. 23, three students at Newman Elementary school in Chino Valley, California were injured when a firearm mounted on a police motorcycle discharged accidentally Wednesday.
CNN reports that the police motorcycle was on display at the school as a part of “Red Ribbon Week,” which promotes drug awareness.
Reports indicate that the firearm discharged sending three students to the hospital as a precaution. Officials say two of the students had minor injuries, and the third was signed out of the hospital “against medical advice.”
Authorities are currently investing the incident to determine what went wrong.
A similar incident was caught on a video that went viral on YouTube in 2006. The video showed a law enforcement officer shooting himself in the foot during a gun safety class. The gun discharged shooting the man in the foot moments he told a classroom full of people that he was the only one professional enough to handle the weapon .
A 2012 report from Smartgunlaws.org states that there were 31,076 deaths caused by firearms in 2010. Of those, 606 people were died from unintentional firearm injuries.
