Don't get lost in a sea of old clothes! Donate them & make a difference!
So you've packed away all those old clothes into a box destined for the donation bin at Goodwill. But before you donate to one of the greatest thrift store you've ever had to privilege of rummaging through (Mountain View Goodwill, I'm lookin' at you), take a second to think about who, or what, may be picking up your donation. Consider how your donation may instead help these local charities:
- Riley Center Services for Battered Women, San Francisco: Victims of domestic violence often flee their abusers with nothing but the clothes on their backs. You can help by donating your new or gently worn clothing and accessories to your local shelter. Something as simple as a new sweater or pair of jeans can boost their self-confidence and independence--aiding in their recovery.
- San Jose Supportive Housing, San Jose: With the current state of the economy, hundreds of families are being forced out of their homes due to evictions and foreclosures each day. Your donations of clothes, coats, pillows, and blankets can really help these families during their difficult transition.
- The Princess Project, San Francisco: Got an old formal gown lying around? Or maybe you still have your high school prom dress. Whatever the case, the Princess Project is an organization committed to promoting self-confidence and individual beauty by offering free prom dresses and accessories to high school girls who are otherwise unable to afford them. By donating to the Princess Project, you can be sure that your dress is not going to end up on someone going to a prom-themed Halloween party--instead, your dress will helping one lucky girl feel beautiful and confident at her prom.
National Charities like Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and the American Red Cross are invaluable to the community. But if you don't want your items to just sit in one of their millions of stores, consider donating to a local charity first!

Please understand the charities before you suggest people donate to a "local" charity. All Goodwill agencies are local. They each cater to the needs of their community, and are autonomous 501c3 non-profits. If you want your donations to help your local communities, donate to your local Goodwill. Goodwill and Salvation Army are very different. Goodwill helps ALL kinds of people with programs tailored to local needs. It is one of the most inclusive and effective charities I have ever seen. As the Bay Area celebrates pride, we should celebrate inclusive organizations that value the great LOCAL diversity.
