A Pennsylvania couple was sent to prison over the 2nd prayer death in their family. The USA Today reported on Feb. 19, 2014, that Herbert and Catherine Schaible were sentenced to three and a half to seven years in prison over the death of a second child that was ill, but not taken to see a doctor.
Eight-month-old Brandon's time to die had not yet arrived, according to the judge on Wednesday. The very angry judge also let the couple know that they had violated their parole.
"You've killed two of your children ... not God, not your church, not religious devotion — you," Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge Benjamin Lerner said.
The Schaibles did express remorse and said they were sorry for violating a court order that told them to seek medical care for their children. This came after their two-year-old children died in 2009 of pneumonia and not receiving medical treatment.
The couple pleaded no-contest to the charge of third-degree murder last year in the death of young Brandon. Catherine and Herbert Schaible do have seven surviving children.
In 2013, Herbert Schaible told the authorities that medicine is "against our religious beliefs." He continued on saying that "We believe in divine healing, that Jesus shed blood for our healing and that he died on the cross to break the devil's power."
The parole they violated stemmed from being convicted of the 2009 death of their son Kent. At that time, the couple was put on 10 years probation and ordered to seek medical care for any of their other children that got sick.
