Toyota plans to recall 270,000 Prius cars worldwide due to a brake problem. The latest version of the Prius that was sold in May of 2009 will be recalled, and 170,000 Toyota Prius’ from Japan and 100,000 from the US will be included in the recall, the Associated Press reported Monday from various reports.

According to the Associated Press, Toyota plans to make the announcement in Japan on Tuesday.

A spokeswoman from Toyota Motor Corp. however, said that a decision had not been made. The only public statement that Toyota has made is that they will deal with the Prius brake problem.

Toyota has been dealing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about a possible US recall, but NHTSA said they were not aware of any definite plans.

Over the past few months Toyota has recalled over 7,000,000 cars due to a gas pedal and floor mat problem. Toyota has been strongly criticized for taking too much time to make a decision about issuing a recall. 19 deaths have been linked to the current recall that is in place.

Toyota announced last week that the dealerships began to fix the recalled vehicles. For more information on that story, click here.

The problems with Toyota and the recalls over the past few months creates an opportunity for other dealerships. "Every dog has his day," said Jerry Seiner who owns several General Motors dealerships in Salt Lake City. "Maybe they'll take a second look at us instead of Toyota...when Toyota stumbles it's our opportunity."

Toyota had a 47% drop in sales from December after the recalls were announced. For more on that story, click here.
