What looked like the beginning to a clear, beautiful Friday soon became a nightmare for residents of Chelyabinsk, Russia as the sky filled with a scary fireball streaking across the sky. The deafening sonic boom accompanied by a blinding flash, which was brighter than the sun, frightened school children, and many ran out of their classrooms crying.
According to heroldsun.com, “Lessons had just started at Chelyabinsk schools when the meteor exploded, and officials said 258 children were among those injured. Amateur video showed a teacher speaking to her class as a powerful shock wave hit the room.”
At least one high school student was also injured in the blast. She gave this statement as her nose still bled and she had a bandage covering her upper lip, “'After the flash, nothing happened for about three minutes. Then we rushed outdoors. ... The door was made of glass, a shock wave made it hit us,'' she said.”(heroldsun.com)
Scientists estimate the force the meteor unleashed on these children today was 20-times greater than the Hiroshima bomb dropped on Japan.
You can hear a first hand account of the event from a fifth-grader on the accompanying video. Our hearts and prayers go out to all who were injured in this tragedy.
