25 million bees escape in Southern Utah after semi-truck rolls over

Sunday, 25 million bees escaped a semi-truck after a rollover in Southern Utah; the truck driver and his wife were stung numerous times after the accident.  Interstate 15 was shut down after a semi-truck hit a curve in a construction site, and rolled the truck that was hauling $116,000 worth of bees from South Dakota to California.  I-15 re-opened Monday morning.

Millions of angry bees escaped or died after the accident near Saint George, Utah. Truck driver Louis Holst, 48, and his wife were traveling from South Dakota with 460 bee hives.

“First responders came and drug me and my wife through the front window,” said Holst. “Then we panicked.”  They began to swat at the bees and were stung repeatedly.

“We just started swinging our clothes,” he said. “They stung her all up and down her neck.”

“Nobody was prepared for anything like that,” he said.

Two Highway Patrol officers who responded to the scene were also stung by the bees.
