23 ways to eat fast food and still be healthy

Include fast food in your diet and still be healthy

Reader's Digest recently released the 23 ways to get everything you want out of life, officially named “23 Ways to Keep Fast Food in your Diet and be Healthy.” But, once you can hit up McDonald’s for breakfast and Wendy’s for lunch and still have those rockin’ abs you can flex in the bathroom mirror, what else do you need? Here are the 23 ways to break the laws of physics and finally eat mush but look toned.

1. Go for the salad, minus the fried toppings.
Most fast food salads have the reputation of being a calorie booby trap. They call them a salad but they actually have just as much, if not more, bad things in them then the burgers. However, if you choose grilled or broiled protein as your topping, ask for the low-fat dressing, and then only use about half of the dressing packet, they can be delicious and still good for you.

2. Skip the cheese.
If its one of those days when all you need to feel better is a hot juicy burger, but don’t want to regret it afterwards, skip the cheese and just make it a hamburger. Taking off the cheese at McDonald’s will take off 40 calories of pure fat and 2 grams of saturated fat. You also may find that it tastes better; cheap fast food cheese will often mask the flavor of a pretty good tasting burger patty.

3. Ask for extra onions, lettuce, and tomato.
Too avoid what fast food frequenters call the “burger hangover” always ask for more veggies. These will make your meal much more filling, less mushy and bland, and add the vitamins and fiber you need to cancel out some of the effects of the excess sodium and move the food through your body comfortably.

4. Order unsweetened iced tea or bottled water.
Fast food chains specialize in getting as much soda as they can in your body. They make it cheap, the cup sizes huge, and the straws extra wide, in order to shoot as much down your throat as possible. They want you to feel full and satisfied after your meal and soda is the cheapest way for them to fill you up. However, a large sprite at Burger King is 420 calories; about the amount that your meal should be. So stick to the low calorie drinks or diet sodas in order to save your waistline and your bladder the trouble.

5. Choose 1% or skim milk as your drink.
1% milk is only about 100 calories per serving, and skim milk is even less. You may not get the rugged trucker look your going for with a milk mustache, but you’ll get filled up and your daily does of calcium, as opposed to having the calcium slowly sucked out of your bones by your soft drinks.

6. Always say no to the special sauce.
Anything called special or secret sauce is usually just mayonnaise, sugar, and some other colored ingredient. It gives you a whole bunch of fat and calories disproportional to the amount of flavor it adds. Mustard is your best option with a lot of flavor and very little calories or fat or carbohydrates. Ketchup is your next best option although it tends to be quite sugary. Hot sauce is a great option for anything, and olive oil and vinegar would be good to try on subs.

7. Use hot sauce, not ketchup, on your french fries.
Or ¼ ketchup and ¾ hot sauce to cool it down a little bit. Hot sauce is low in calories, has a big, adventurous flavor, and contains nutrients that are particularly good for your body. Plus, it gets you drinking lots of water, which reduces your appetite.
