According to the Canadian Olympic Committee in a press release on Wednesday, a total of 221 Canadians will participate at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi which will start next week.

This will be the largest team that will ever represent Canada. However, that should come as no surprise when you factor in the fact that there will be an immense number of new events at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

They include women's ski jumping, men's and women's slopestyle skiing, men's and women's halfpipe skiing, men's and women's slopestyle snowboarding, and men's and women's slalom snowboarding.

The new events of team figure skating, luge and biathlon would generally not have been a factor in the rise of the Canadian totals because the athletes would have competed in the traditional events for the respective sports anyways.

The first events will take place on Wednesday, February 5 at 11:00 p.m. MT with qualifying in men's and women's slopestyle snowboarding and women's moguls.

Watch out for the Dufour-Lapointe sisters of Justine, Chloe and Maxime of Montreal in women's moguls and world champion Spencer O'Brien of Courtenay, British Columbia in the women's slopestyle snowboarding.
