A 22-year-old woman accused of killing a veteran police officer was allegedly drunk and on drugs at the time of the incident, according to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office.
On Tuesday a Fulton County jury formally charged Ms. Nicole Chasity Jones in a 13-count indictment for the wreck that killed Atlanta Senior Police Officer Gail Thomas last month, the district attorney’s spokeswoman Ms. Yvette Brown said.
The 13 counts include first-degree homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of drugs, reckless driving, and possession of open container of alcoholic beverage while operating vehicle, Ms. Brown said.
Senior Officer Thomas was struck and killed on the ramp from I-75 southbound at I-85 northbound near the Brookwood Interchange on Jan. 24.
Officer Thomas, 46, had just arrived on the scene to assist another officer with an accident.
As the 15-year veteran was attempting to divert traffic away from the previous crash, she was struck by a 1998 Honda Civic, Atlanta police have said.
Officer Thomas, who was just starting her shift, was killed on impact, police said. Ms. Jones was arrested at the scene.
