A $217 million Powerball jackpot was won by couple from Frederiksburg, Virginia, the Richmond Times Dispatch reported Friday.
The lucky $217 million lottery winners are David and Nancy Honeywell. The jackpot is the second-largest in Virginia history.
“All our fears are gone now,” Honeywell told reporters as he claimed his winnings on Valentine's Day.. “So we feel much better.”
The jackpot winners work for the US Department of Defense.
David Honeywell said that he purchased the winning ticket for the Feb 6 drawing at the Richmond airport while on his way to a business trip.
When Honeywell checked the numbers the following morning and couldn’t believe his eyes. He had the winning numbers: 5-27-36-38-41. He called his wife immediately.
“I thought I was having a heart attack,” he told Powerball officials.
The winning couple had the option of taking a lump sum of $136.4 million instead of the $217 annuity. Almost all the Powerball winners chose a lump sum. The Honeywells have told lottery officials they would like to take the lump sum.
Nancy Honeywell is a US Defense Dept project manager. David Honeywell is a computer scientist.
The couple said they plan to retire very soon. What do they plan on doing with the jackpot? David Honeywell said he drives a 13-year-od car with 170,000 miles on it, so you can bet a new car is high on the list.
