Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation is now casting for the next Planet of the Apes film titled Rise of the Apes. British director Rupert Wyatt will helm the film from a script penned by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa. Wyatt is the founder of the film collection Picture Farm, which has produced numerous shorts, documentaries and features, including the Sundance Award-winning documentary Dark Days.
Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark's Chernin Entertainment will produce the film. Chernin Entertainment has a production deal with Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation and currently has a six-year deal with 20th Century Fox Film Corporation and 20th Century Fox Television. Prior to creating Chernin Entertainment, Peter Chernin was as Rupert Murdoch’s second in command at News Corporation.
The last Planet of the Apes film was directed by Tim Burton in 2001 and grossed over $362 million worldwide at the box office alone, not counting DVD sales and rentals. But this time around, Special effects company Weta Digital of New Zealand will create an effects-driven motion picture using the groundbreaking technology that the company created for the James Cameron film Avatar. It would not surprise anyone if Rise of the Apes is filmed in 3D.
Actor James Franco has been cast to play the role of a scientist, who through his genetic experiments, creates a hyper-intelligent chimp that incites a worldwide ape revolution and causes the downfall of mankind. The story takes place in present day San Francisco, however it will be filmed at Mammoth Studios in Burnaby, BC and various locations around Vancouver.
