205 is what is best for Randy Couture

Randy Couture is one of the most popular fighters in MMA and one of the most beloved guys of all time. ‘Captain American’ has made a name for himself in MMA over the past decade that includes three heavyweight championships and two light heavyweight championships.

In twenty-six fights, sixteen have been championship fights. The guy is a living legend and deserves to recognize as one. He has an amazing ability to make the most of every ‘big fight’ opportunity that comes his way.

At age 46, how can anyone tell him he should not fight anymore? After re-signing with the UFC for six more fights over the next twenty-eight months, it is certain Couture will finish his career in the UFC. However, the three time heavyweight champion should make a move back to 205.

The UFC’s heavyweight division has long been criticized for its lack of talent as well as up and coming stars. But with guys like Brock Lesnar, Shane Carwin, Cain Velasquez, and even Todd Duffee making their way up the ladder ‘The Natural’ may need to make a move to 205.

Moving to 205 for Couture is not a bad idea. He would be a good sized 205 lb fighter and heck he has already won the light heavyweight title twice. The match-ups at light heavyweight have to be more intriguing to him especially when it comes to the huge PPV buys bonuses he gets.

Imagine Couture versus Quinton Jackson, Rashad Evan, Lyoto Machida, and the list goes on. It doesn’t matter if he wins or loses. Any of those fights would sell out and bring in big PPV numbers. The move to light heavyweight makes sense financially, but does Couture think it makes sense physically and skill level wise?

The UFC’s light heavyweight division is full of extremely talented fighters and if Couture wants to test his skill level, this is where he needs to go. At this point in his career it may be better to stay away from the oversized guys that seem to be filling the heavyweight division.

While Couture clearly lost in his fight against Nogueira, at 205 he would not be the ‘smaller’ fighter in most cases and would certainly be an advantage. I think he has the skill and style to keep going. Couture, like any other fighter, needs to continue to add facets to his game to improve.

Only time will if Randy Couture can make it another two years in the brutal sport of MMA, but I am sure we will all be watching him defy the odds every time he steps in the cage.
