Having a test-drive vehicle for a full week can be fun most of the time. When I was told I was getting a new 2015 Volvo S60 sedan 2015 for a week, I was elated. Volvo's certainly has the reputation for safety features, but this was an opportunity to evaluate the driving dynamics under various road conditions. This one was with the 'new' 4-cylinder engine.

The exterior color of the test-drive vehicle was Bright Silver Metallic. It was a 4-door mid-size sedan, generally classified as a luxury sedan. The spec sheet had a laundry list of special equipment, technology, safety and security items, luxury attachments, and accessories. In addition, there were extra add-on's for extra charges, such as the Platinum Package, Technology Package, and more.

The S60 T6 Drive-E was powered by 2.0-liter, twin Super & Turbo Chargers, direct-injection, 4-cylinder engine. This engine produces 302 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The engine was matched to an 8-speed geartronic automatic transmission, with the addition of Quick Shift paddle shifters. There is an Eco-mode option that helps save on mileage. The normal and sport modes are there for those who want to experience those differences.

The T5 and T6 designations indicate the relative power of the engine. This test model was rated a T6 which include the twin turbo-charger and super-charger. The T5 model only has the turbocharged engine. The Drive-E designation indicates the family of new engines that Volvo is rolling out in its 2015 models. Volvo is promoting
these as being more ecological friendly and sustaining a clean and safe environment.

The dashboard included a 7-inch color LCD monitor, a 160 watt high performance audio system with 8 speakers, and HD radio. There was a powered glass moon-roof, leather seating upholstery, front sport seats, 8-way powered front seats, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, electronic parking brake, dual zone climate control, heated power outside rear-view mirror, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. These were all part of the standard accessories that came on the base vehicle. The MSRP for the 2015 Volvo S60 T6 Drive-E was $38,150.

The test-drive Volvo was really fun to drive and made the week enjoyable. The car holds the road extremely well and is very comfortable. When you are behind the wheel, it feels good and from the outside, it looks good. The test model had an EPA rating of 28 mpg overall and 35 mpg for the highway. For the week, I actually had a combined average of 32 mpg.

Extra packages and additions on the test model bumped the price up quite a bit, but those additions were very, very nice and made the ride much better. The Platinum Package added a navigation system with real-time traffic, auto dimming exterior and interior rear-view mirrors, accent lighting, an integrated garage door opener, power retractable exterior rear-view mirror, rear park assist camera, a grocery bag holder, and upgraded the sound system to a more premium system. The cost for the Platinum Package was $3,350.

The Technology Package added adaptive cruise control, collision warning with full automatic braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, distance alert, driver alert control, lane departure warning, active high beam, and road sign information. The Technology Package cost $1,500. The Blind Spot Information Package added cross traffic alert, lane change merge aid, and front & rear park assist, for an additional $900. Other extra costs included upgraded 19-inch wheels for $250, active Xenon headlights with washers for $800, metallic paint for $550, heated front seats for $500, destination delivery charges of $925. Bottom sticker price of the test-drive model was $47,925.

An irritant was the Lane Departure system which continually beeped and made intrusive noises from almost any patch on the roadway. It obviously could not distinguish painted lane striping from other splotches.

The Volvo S60 is built in Gothenburg, Sweden, but you don't have to travel to Europe to enjoy the special experience of driving this luxury mid-size sedan. All the special touches and premium enhancements are there in the 2015 S60 T6 Drive-E edition. The comfort level is exceptional, the driving is easy, and the enjoyment is pleasant.
