2015 Ford Mustang set to sit pretty atop New York City's Empire State Building

Marking the iconic American pony car's 50th anniversary, plans are underway to plant a 2015 Ford Mustang convertible atop the observation deck of one of the world's tallest skyscrapers, New York's Empire State Building. The riveting muscle car event is set to coincide with this year's upcoming annual New York International Auto Show.

Now the question remains, how will the Ford engineers lasso that Mustang and get it up 86 stories?

The original Empire State building/Ford Mustang stunt which was accomplished in 1965, reportedly divided the vehicle into threes plus the windshield. The Mustang had to be disassembled because the skyscraper's elevators are too small and it does not have a freight car that can accommodate an entire car.

The current model year Mustang is not only a longer vehicle but wider one as well and will reportedly make its elevator transportation even more challenging. Before the publicity event could be replicated and the car divvied up, a Ford crew had to visit Empire State to get accurate measurements of the building's elevators and doors. The team will then disassemble the vehicle so its sections can securely fit into custom made racks that can be rolled into the building's elevators.

After the Mustang has reached the first observation deck (there is another on the 102nd floor), the sections are then removed from the racks and Ford technicians will have only six hours in which to work their magic and flawlessly piece the car back together again.

The 2015 ford mustang is sleeker, wider, sexier, incorporating new technologies with eye-catching design cues. The Mustang which has thus far, since its splash in '65, sold over 9 million vehicles is expected to hit showrooms later this year in the fall. The car will reportedly go into production mid-year at Ford's Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan.

Ford's chief operating officer, Mark Fields says the company is ecstatic that the very same feat is being recreated, so that people can experience the very heartbeat of the Ford Motor Company, the 2015 Mustang, “New York is one of the greatest cities in the world, and it’s the place where the Ford Mustang story began 50 years ago,” said Fields in a press release. “We’re thrilled to be visiting the architectural landmark that has been the heart of the Manhattan skyline for 83 years with the newest generation of the car that is the soul of Ford Motor Company.”
