2014 Winter Olympics: Gold and silver for Russia in pairs figure skating

Wednesday night’s primetime coverage on NBC featured figure skating’s free skate in the pair's discipline.

Team USA’s Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir reached their ultimate goal of placing in the top ten. Russia scored a gold and silver in the final freestyle program.

Russian silver medalists, Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov, skated a flawless routine throughout the telecast. They were the best of the night when many other couples had difficulty with landings, including the gold medalists and Team USA’s Castelli and Shnapir.

One disappointment was not seeing Tampa Bay-trained Team USA pairs, Felicia Zhang and Nathan Batholomay, in their free skate. After their short program on Tuesday night, they were in 14th place. Yet they moved up two spots to claim 12th overall.

It was a night of movie soundtracks when Marissa and Simon skated to a James Bond thriller “Skyfall.” Russia’s Tatyana Volosozhar and Maksim Trankov went with music from “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

After Volosozhar and Trankov’s routine was over, the pairs were overcome with emotion on the ice. It was then they realized, after skating a fairly clean program, they are gold medalists.

This was the first time a Winter Olympic gold medal was awarded to any Russian figure skater in their homeland for an individual event.
