2014 Winter Olympic medal count standings after 9th full day of final events

The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi have completed their ninth day of final events, and that means the medal standings have been updated. Once again, there is a new leader after the medal events of Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, and it is the Netherlands, but they have the Russian Federation and the United States right on their heels.

Sitting in first place is the Netherlands who have 17 overall Olympic medals with five gold, five silver, and seven bronze medals. Both the Russian Federation and the United States have 16 a piece as they are tied for second place.

Norway and Canada are right behind them with 14 total medals each, and the only other country in double figures is Germany with 12.

Here are some of the highlights from Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014:

  • Both Canada and the United States men's hockey teams chalked up wins.
  • Sweden took gold in the men's relay while Russia took the silver.
  • World champion figure skaters Charlie White and Meryl Davis scored a personal best of 78.89.
  • Rowan Cheshire of Britain was knocked out cold in the half-pipe skiing training and taken to the hospital.
  • The Jamaican bobsled team came in last place in the day's event.

Remember that Sochi is nine hours ahead of the Eastern time zone for the United States. That means the day's events are officially completed, but won't be shown until prime time television for America.
