This weekend marks the return to the USA Triathlon Collegiate Nationals. The events will be held Friday April 4 and Saturday April 5, 2014 in Tempe, Arizona. This event started in 1992 and now includes 3 races.
Friday will feature a sprint triathlon. Approximately 130 collegiate qualifiers are expected to complete in the 750 meter swim, 20 kilometer bike ride and the 5 kilometer run. This is the second running of this draft-legal event. The race will be live blogged starting at 9:00 am Pacific time.
Saturday will feature the traditional Olympic distance race. Approximately 1,200 student-athletes are expected to compete in the 1,500 meter swim, 36 kilometer bike ride and 10 kilometer run. The defending champion school, the University of Colorado, has won the overall title 4 times and it looking for a fifth. All five of the 2013 top five teams are returning, as are 8 of the top 10 combined men's and women's finishers.
The final race of the weekend will be the third running of the Mixed Team Relay race. Two men and two women will form teams that run mini-sprint triathlons before tagging their teammate. Each student-athlete will complete a 250 meter swim, a 5 kilometer bike ride and a 1.2 kilometer run.
