Richie Crampton (Top Fuel), Alexis DeJoria (Funny Car), Shane Gray (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) all collected the first Wallys of their careers at the prestigious Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. The 18th race of 2014 ended the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series’ “regular season,” as the NHRA Countdown to the Championship kicks off in less than two weeks at zMAX Dragway in Concord, North Carolina.
Rookie Crampton took round wins over Billy Torrence, Shawn Langdon and nine-time Indy winner Tony Schumacher before reaching the finals against another Torrence, this time son Steve. It was Crampton’s second win of the season.
DeJoria, the fourth woman to win a Wally at Indy, earned early-round wins against Cruz Pedregon, Blake Alexander and Courtney Force before meeting the Force family patriarch, 16-time Funny Car champion John Force, in the finals. It was DeJoria’s third win of the season.
Gray faced teammate Dave Connolly in the final round after early wins over Shane Tucker, Allen Johnson and his brother, Jonathan Gray. It was Gray’s first win of the season.
Krawiec, the No. 1 qualifier in PSM, defeated Shawn Gann, teammate Andrew Hines and Hector Arana Jr. to reach the finals against Jerry Savoie. It was Krawiec’s third win of the season.
The Countdown to the Championship kicks off Friday through Sunday, September 12th through 14th at zMAX Dragway with the NHRA Carolina Nationals. Keep up with the action at www.nhra.com.
