Day one of the 2014 U.S.A. Track & Field Outdoor Championships was held Wednesday in front of the California State Capitol. The men's and women's shot put championships were on the line. The preliminaries were held around 11:00 A.M. for the women's and 12:30 P.M. for the men's, perfect viewing for the lunch time crowd and a chance to witness world class athletes live and in person. The top twelve shot putters would advance to the afternoon finals.

Among those finishing in the top five or the preliminaries were Michelle Carter (60ft 91/2 in), Brittany Smith (58ft 7 3/4in), Christina Hillman (57ft 10 3/4jn), Tia Brooks (57ft 8 1/4in) and Kyla Buckley (57ft 3in) in the women's division. On the men's side the top five qualifiers were Kurtis Robinson (67ft 9 3/4in), Reese Hoffa (66ft 4 1/2 in), Cory Martin (65ft 7 1/2in), Jonathan Jones (65ft 5 1/2 in) and Jordan Clarke (65ft 4 3/4in). The top three medalist for the women's was Michelle Carter (Gold) with a distance of 63 feet 9 3/4 inches, Felisha Johnson (Silver) 62 feet 11 3/4 inches and Tia Brooks (Bronze) 62 feet 9 1/2 inches. The men's medalists were Joseph Kovacs (Gold) 73 feet 3 1/2 inches, Kurtis Roberts (Silver) 70 feet 5 1/4 inches and Reese Hoffa (Bronze) 68 feet 2 1/4 inches.

The crowd attending the event was very festive and it brought an energetic vibe. The athletes really appreciated the fans and some of them feed off of their energy during the final round. Tomorrow's events will be held at Hornet Stadium located on the campus of Sacramento State University. The first meet will begin at 10:00 A.M. and tickets to day two start at just $15 per person.
