The 2014 U.S.A. Track & Field Outdoor Championships begin tomorrow on the steps of the California State Capitol located here in downtown Sacramento, California. This will be the first of four days of athletic competition that will take place in the city. Wednesday's events will be free and open to the public in front of the Capitol located on 10th and Capitol Mall. The Men's and Women's shot put qualifying, trials and finals will be held throughout the day starting at 10:00 A.M. (women) and 11:30 A.M. (mens) and the finals will begin at 4:30 P.M. (women) and 6:15 P.M. (men).
A shot put ring was constructed near the sidewalk on 10th street by Sacramento State engineering students. The ring and landing area was designed to meet international and national specifications for the athletes. All of the country's top shot putters will be competing such as the defending champion Ryan Whiting, Christian Cantwell the 2009 World Champion, Reese Hoffa the 2012 Olympic bronze medalist & 2007 World Champion along with two top newcomers Joe Kovacs and Ryan Crouser. Michelle Carter will be headlining the women's shot put along with Tia Brooks and Brittany Smith.
The rest of the Outdoor Track & Field championships will be held at Hornet Stadium located on the campus of California State University of Sacramento. C.S.U.S. has held several track & field events in the past such as the 2000 & 2004 Olympic Track & Field Trials, 2010 U.S.A. Masters Championships and the N.C.A.A. Track & Field Championships. A new track and upgraded facilities have been added to the revamped Hornet Stadium.
