2014 Travel Trend: Most Americans will travel within U.S.

Most Americans expect to travel domestically in 2014 according to a UStiA Survey that was released today. UStiA is a non-profit association of insurance carriers and allied businesses involved in the development, administration and marketing of travel insurance and assistance. The survey also revealed that sixty-one percent of Americans will be traveling in the year 2014, resulting in an average of 2.4 vacation trips.

Education and Income predictably determine amount of travel

The UStiA survey also found that 73% of Americans who earn over $50,000 plan on taking at least one trip during the course of the year. This is in contrast to only 46% of those earning under $50,000 who expect to travel on at least one vacation trip. (A vacation trip is defined as 100 miles or more away from home.)

About 70% of those with college degrees will be traveling this year: Compare that with 56% without degrees. Marital status also seems to affect our ability to travel. Only 52% of unmarried individuals are planning a trip over 100 miles from home this year while 70% of married respondents expect to travel.

Travel within North America trumps international destinations

Proximity, cost, and ease of domestic travel may be major reasons why 85% of those traveling will be vacationing within the continental United States as well as Canada. And of those who are planning vacations this year, travelers are about equally divided on how far they will go. About 28% expect to travel between 100-500 miles away from home, 29% expect to log between 500-1,000 miles in their journey, and 28% will be topping 1,000 miles or more.
