Watkins Glen International, located in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of New York State, is one of two road courses on the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule. The course also hosts SCCA and the TUDOR United Sports Car Challenge, as well as the Finger Lakes Wine Festival.
Racing originated in Watkins Glen in 1948, racing through various roads in the village. A temporary road course was built in 1953, and the current 2.3-mile permanent circuit was built in 1956. The first NASCAR race at The Glen was held in 1957, and Formula One visited the track from 1961 to 1980. The Glen closed in 1981 following financial difficulties; it was purchased in 1983, renovated, and reopened in 1984. NASCAR returned to The Glen in 1986.
Major events scheduled for Watkins Glen International in 2014 include the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen, June 26th through 29th, as part of the inaugural TUDOR United Sports Car Challenge season; the SCCA Majors Super Tour, July 4th through 6th; the NASCAR Nationwide Series and Sprint Cup Series at The Glen, August 7th through 10th; and the Glenora Wine Cellars U.S. Vintage Grand Prix, September 5th through 7th. The Finger Lakes Wine Festival will be held July 11th through 14th.
Tickets for the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen, the SCCA weekend, the NASCAR weekend and the Vintage Grand Prix, along with the Finger Lakes Wine Festival, are on sale now. For more information on these events and to purchase tickets, visit www.theglen.com.
