NHRA Top Fuel rookie Richie Crampton earned his first Wally at the Toyota NHRA Summernationals Sunday at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey. Cruz Pedregon (Funny Car), Jeg Coughlin Jr. (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also took home Wallys from Englishtown.
Crampton, replacing Morgan Lucas in the Geico dragster this season, took round wins against Dom Lagana, JR Todd and Shawn Langdon one his way to the finals against Doug Kalitta. Crampton was the No. 2 qualifier in Top Fuel this weekend.
Pedregon, the No. 1 qualifier in Funny Car with a national e.t. record of 3.959 seconds on Friday, failed to back-up the run this weekend and it will not be recognized as the record; he needed a run of 3.999 seconds or better to back-up the run. He did, however, come home with the Funny Car Wally after wins against Terry Haddock, Tommy Johnson Jr., Jack Beckman and Del Worsham.
Allen Johnson, the No. 1 qualifier in Pro Stock with a national e.t. record of 6.472 seconds, also failed to back-up his run after a first-round exit. His teammate Coughlin Jr. covered the complete bracket with early-round wins over Kenny Delco, Shane Gray and Dave Connolly before heading to the finals against Greg Anderson.
It was a battle of the Harleys in PSM , with Hines coming out victorious against his teammate Eddie Krawiec. Hines earned round wins against Adam Arana, Michael Ray and Hector Arana Jr. on his way to the finals.
The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series gets back on track Friday through Sunday, June 13th through 15th at Bristol Dragway in Tennessee, home of the Ford NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals. Keep up with the action at www.nhra.com.
