The 13th race of the 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season is the eighth annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals, taking place Thursday through Sunday, July 3rd through 6th at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. All four top Mello Yello Series categories – Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle – will be in action, as will the NHRA Pro Mod Series and the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.
Two of last season’s winners – Khalid alBalooshi (Top Fuel) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) – return to Norwalk to defend their titles; last season’s Funny Car winner was Johnny Gray, while Mike Edwards won in Pro Stock.
Summit Motorsports Park always puts on a party for the NHRA Nationals, complete with the famous “one pound of ice cream for a dollar” and live music on the campgrounds for those staying at the track or just looking to avoid the traffic getting out of the track. There’s also a Friday night fireworks show in honor of our nation’s birthday.
On Thursday, July 3rd, sportsman qualifying gets underway at 9 a.m. ET. On Friday, July 4th, sportsman eliminations begin at 8 a.m. ET, followed by qualifying for the Comp Eliminator and Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car classes beginning at 11:15 a.m.; ET Pro Mod qualifying sessions are at 4 and 6:30 p.m. ET, and pro qualifying sessions get underway at 4:45 and 7:15 p.m. ET.
On Saturday, July 5th, sportsman eliminations continue at 8 a.m. ET, followed by Comp Eliminator eliminations beginning at 11:15 a.m. ET. Top Alcohol qualifying continues at noon ET, followed by Comp Eliminator second round eliminations at 2:15 p.m. ET and Top Alcohol first round at 3 p.m. ET. The final Pro Mod qualifying session takes place at 4 p.m. ET; the first round of Pro Mod eliminations takes place at 6:30 p.m. ET. Pro qualifying rounds at 4:45 and 7:15 p.m. ET Final elimination rounds kick off Sunday, July 6th at 11 a.m. ET.
