2014 Speedweeks at Daytona: Austin Dillon puts No. 3 on top

The No. 3 Chevrolet has returned to the top of the pylon at Daytona International Speedway: rookie Austin Dillon put the iconic car number, which has not been seen in the Sprint Cup Series since the passing of Dale Earnhardt at the speedway in 2001, on the pole for next Sunday’s Daytona 500. Martin Truex Jr. sits on the outside pole in the No. 78 Furniture Row Chevy as the only other driver to lock in his position for the 56th running of the “Great American Race.”

The rest of the Daytona 500 field will be determined Thursday night during the Budweiser Duels at Daytona qualifying races; those fields will be based on the qualifying speeds from Sunday’s session – find out more about Daytona 500 qualifying here.

Dillon has raced the No. 3 in the Camping World Truck Series and Nationwide Series, winning the Truck Series rookie of the year in 2010, the title in 2011, the Nationwide Series rookie of the year in 2012 and the championship in 2013. His younger brother Ty won the Truck Series rookie of the year in the No. 3 in 2012; this year, he replaces Austin Dillon in the No. 3 in the Nationwide Series.
