This time it wasn’t journalists, critics, academy members or the public voting for its winners. Instead, the SAG Awards honored fellow actors within their union or guild Saturday evening. It was presented live on the TNT & TBS networks simultaneously. Much like the Golden Globes, the television category is presented alongside with films.
Some actors best known for their award-winning work in feature films scored an Actor statuette for outstanding performance in a TV movie. Michael Douglas captured another well-deserved victory against his co-leading star, Matt Damon, in HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra.”
One of the biggest surprises of the night was Helen Mirren’s win as the defense attorney in “Phil Spector.” Mirren immediately acknowledged Elisabeth Moss’ stunning performance in the Sundance Channel mini-series, “Top of the Lake.” Moss won in this category at the Golden Globes.
Bryan Cranston continued his roll of major TV awards by winning for outstanding actor in a drama series. “Breaking Bad” won for best ensemble. "What a way to go out in style," were Cranston’s words as he spoke on behalf of the cast at the podium.
Ty Burrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus proved to be true comedians with their acceptance speeches in the comedy category. “Modern Family” won its fourth Actor for best ensemble in a comedy series.
“Downton Abbey’s” Maggie Smith won yet another award, and continued to be the proverbial no-show.
Rita Moreno proves she is no fluke as an EGOT. EGOT’s are the rare species of actors who’ve won all four major awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. She received the Life Achievement Award from her former co-star on the PBS children’s TV series “The Electric Company,” Morgan Freeman.
