The 2014 Preakness post position and odds were made official this afternoon and to no one's surprise California Chrome is the overwhelming favorite. According to a SB Nation report on May 14 Kentucky Derby champion California Chrome is favored to continue his run towards a Triple Crown attempt this Saturday at the 139th running of the Preakness in Baltimore, Maryland.
The Triple Crown is one of the hardest trophies to win in sports and the proof is evident. Twelve horses have won the first two Triple Crown races since Affirmed was the last horse to pull off the feat back in 1978, yet they couldn't win the finale. To win the Triple Crown a horse must win the Kentucky derby, Preakness and the Belmont Stakes.
If California Chrome can pull off the win this Saturday at Pimlico, the media frenzy will start to build for the Belmont Stakes seconds after the race concludes. The Belmont Stakes is scheduled to take place on June 7 from Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.
The odds for the race will change several times before post time, but it is almost assured that California Chrome will go off as the big favorite. Is it possible for upset this Saturday? Anything is possible in horse racing.
Two horses that may be able to pull off the upset are Social Inclusion and General A Rod. While Social Inclusion didn't run in the 2014 Kentucky Derby he is listed at 5-1. General A Rod finished 11th in this year's Derby, but in a much smaller field this time around General A Rod may have a shot at crossing the finish line first this weekend.
Here is a look at the post positions and current odds for the 2014 Preakness. The Preakness is scheduled to take place this Saturday, May 17 at 6:18 p.m. ET.
