2014 Pocono 400 qualifying: Hamlin on pole at Pocono

Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin set a new track record at Pocono Raceway on Friday, qualifying for the pole in the No. 11 FedEx Ground Toyota Camry for Sunday’s Pocono 400.

Hamlin’s fast lap of 181.415 mph (49.610 seconds) in the final round of knock-out qualifying narrowly beat Kurt Busch, who will start on the outside pole after his lap of 181.408 mph (49.612 seconds).

Hamlin’s JGR teammate Kyle Busch will start sixth in the No. 18 Peanut Butter M&MS Toyota on Sunday after his fast lap of 180.458 mph (49.873 seconds) in knock-out qualifying. Matt Kenseth’s mixed luck at Pocono continues, s the driver of the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota qualified 26th with a lap of 177.968 mph (50.571 seconds).

The Pocono 400 goes green on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

JGR development driver Cody Coughlin, driving the No. 55 JEGS.com Toyota for Venturini Motorsprots, finished ninth Saturday at Pocono in the ARCA Racing Series Pocono 200. Coughlin started from the back after a crashed in practice moved him to a back-up car.
