Thursday is Pioneer Day 2014 in Utah, and families around the state have already begun celebrating. It is an official state holiday and many people have the day off and intend to celebrate one of Utah’s holidays. Numerous activities have already begun, but many more will start later today.

In Salt Lake City, Pioneer Day festivities are called the Days of '47. The Days of ’47 Rodeo takes place July 22-26, 2014 at the Energy Solutions Arena at 7 p.m. (6 p.m. on Sunday). The Pioneer Day parade begins downtown in Salt Lake City at 9 a.m.and some families camped out last night along the parade route to get a good seat for the parade. The parade route begins at South Temple & State Street downtown and ends at Liberty Park. For a map of the Pioneer Day parade route, click here.

Thursday is an official state holiday for Pioneer Day, and many state offices, colleges and universities are closed for the day. Many people in Utah have the day off from work; although it is not a federal holiday and federal buildings are still open today. All U.S. post offices in the state will have normal business hours today.

Fireworks will be held at Liberty Park at 10 p.m. on Thursday night.

The Salt Lake City Bees will also play baseball today. Fireworks will also be shown over the stadium immediately after the game, thanks to Larry H. Miller Toyota in Murray.

There is also the Deseret News' Marathon/10K/5K Fitness Walk today and all participants will receive a t-shirt and a souvenir. This is the oldest marathon in the state of Utah and it started in 1970. Over 100,000 people are expected to cheer on the crowd of runners and walkers today. For more information on the marathon route, click here.

The Pioneer Heritage Festival is located at This is the Place Heritage Park and is open today from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The festival shows what life was like for the 19th Century Pioneers and the early Utah settlers.
