The season of awards kicks off with the Palm Springs International Film Festival. The festival precedes the Golden Globe Awards and takes place January 3-13, 2014, in Palm Springs, CA. Meryl Streep and Matthew McConaughey are honored and received awards for the festival's Icon Award and Dallas Buyers Club, respectively. Hanks, star of this year's Captain Phillips and Saving Mr. Banks, received the Palm Springs Film Festival's Chairman's Award Saturday, January 4, 2014. Hanks and other Hollywood heavy hitters including Sandra Bullock, Hellen Mirren, Idris Elba, Julia Roberts, Amy Adams, Bono, Richard Gere, Diane Lane and Chiwetel Ejiofor -- hit the annual awards dinner in anticipation of Wednesday's deadline for Oscar nomination votes.

Gravity's Sandra Bullock got some of the biggest laughs when she stepped onstage to receive her Desert Palm Achievement Award and joked about a supposed feud between her and Julia Roberts.

"Julia, you and I are in a feud over George Clooney. We talked about this right? It's shared custody," she said.

Lupita Nyong'o

The 12 Years a Slave actress was the breakthrough performance award winner and was so tearfully overwhelmed onstage that she almost forgot her formidable trophy on the podium.

Idris Elba and Naomie Harris

The actors from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom are more than just co-stars in the Nelson Mandela biopic (Elba plays Mandela while Harris portrays Winnie Mandela).
