The 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season kicks off Thursday through Sunday, February 6th through 9th with the Circle K NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in California, and the Top Fuel division will see a mix of familiar faces, new drivers and new combinations.
2013 Top Fuel champ Shawn Langdon and his Al-Anabi Racing teammate Khalid alBalooshi return to the field, as do Don Schumacher Racing veterans Tony Schumacher, Antron Brown and Spencer Massey. All five drivers finished in the top 10 in points last season, with the Al-Anabi team combining for eight wins (Langdon – seven, alBalooshi – one) and DSR taking home 11 Wallys (Brown – four, Massey – four, Schumacher – three).
2013 Auto Club Road to the Future winner Brittany Force returns for her sophomore season, trying to put John Force Racing in the winner’s circle in Top Fuel for the first time. Billy Torrence, who had a strong rookie outing in Top Fuel at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, looks to join son Steve as a winner in the category.
Kalitta Motorsports returns with Doug Kalitta behind the wheel, while Clay Millican and Parts Plus make another move, this time from Bob Vandergriff Racing to Tuttle Motorsports. Not returning: Morgan Lucas, who steps away from the cockpit in favor of getting more involved in the family business; Richie Crampton takes over the Morgan Lucas Racing entry this season. Lucas may race part-time in the dragster category in 2014.
With MLR dropping down to one dragster, Brandon Bernstein is out of the cockpit as well, but picked up a job as general manager at Al-Anabi Racing.
No word yet on Larry Dixon, who was putting together a team toward the end of the 2013 season.
