The 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season kicks off Thursday through Sunday, February 6th through 9th with the Circle K NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in California, and the Funny Car division will be as hotly contested as ever.

2013 Funny Car champ John Force will be defending his 16th title against a field that will include his John Force Racing teammates, daughter Courtney and son-in-law Robert Hight. The three-car team combined for eight wins in 2013.

As always in Funny Car, JFR’s main rivalry will be Don Schumacher Racing, with 2013 runner-up Matt Hagan, 2012 Funny Car champ Jack Beckman, Ron Capps and a returning Tommy Johnson Jr. completing the DSR line-up. Hagan, Capps and Johnny Gray, who retired from full-time competition at the end of the season, combined for 12 wins in 2013, while Beckman went surprisingly winless in a season that still landed him third in points.

Outside of these two big teams, Cruz Pedregon, who took home four wins in 2013, had a rough time in testing at Palm Beach International Raceway earlier in January, while Kalitta Motorsports driver Del Worsham, at the test with teammate Alexis deJoria, was among the fastest Funny Cars over the two-day test session. Bob Tasca III will be looking for that little bit extra he needs in order to make the Countdown to the Championship field after finishing 11th last season.
