Event No. 8 on the 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule is the NHRA Kansas Nationals, taking place Memorial Day weekend, Friday through Sunday, May 23rd through 25th, at Heartland Park Topeka. Three of the NHRA’s top categories – Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock – will take to the track for the 26th annual event. The Mello Yello Series is joined by the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.
Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel) and Jeg Coughlin Jr. (Pro Stock) return to defend their titles at HPT, while the Funny Car of 2013 winner Johnny Gray will return with Tommy Johnson Jr. behind the wheel. Funny Car legend John Force leads all driver with nine wins at HPT, while Cruz Pedregon (Funny Car) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) each have four wins.
“We used to race in Topeka on Memorial Day and I am very excited to be going back on that date,” said Funny Car points leader Robert Hight. “We will get a lot of fans that camp out for the event, so it will have an atmosphere like Brainerd. This race facility and racing surface are top notch and the fans are great.”
“Moving it up a week and having it over Memorial Day is going to be great for the fans in the Midwest and the Kansas area,” said Coughlin Jr., a two-time Pro Stock winner at the track. “We enjoy the facilities at Heartland Park, and we've have some good success there over the years. We've been going to the race track for what seems like 20 years now, dating back to my Super Stock days. I think it's going to be a great weekend for the event.”
Pro qualifying sessions begin Friday, May 23rd at 4:30 and 7 p.m. CT, continuing Saturday, May 24th at 1:30 and 4 p.m. CT. Eliminations begin Sunday, May 25th at 11 a.m. CT.
