Swedish weavers from across the country will gather in the south Mississippi town of Picayune in June for the 2014 National Swedish Weaving Convention. The 11th annual event takes place at Holiday Inn Express from Monday, June 23 to Thursday, June 26, with a Meet and Greet session scheduled for Sunday evening, June 22.
The conference will be hosted by RLM Swedish Weavers of Picayune. Preregistration (required) for the event is $25.
A tradition during the conferences is to create a charitable project. This year's project is baby blankets for a local crisis pregnancy center. Attendees will bring their contributions to the event.
Two exchanges are among the events planned during the convention: a Swedish weave runner exchange and a “froggie” gift exchange. The frog items celebrate the little amphibian mascot of Swedish weavers. Their solution to mistaken stitches echo his call, "rip it, rip it!" according to Edie Flores, leader of the host group.
Attendees can look forward to a sightseeing day on Friday, June 27 with the destination to be determined by poll of the group.
RLM Swedish Weavers meet at Resurrection Life Worship Center in Picayune in the Holy Java Café. The group is open to all interested weavers of all levels. Swedish weaving is a traditional craft that uses even weave fabric as the canvas for a design created by running colored thread or yarn over and under the threads of the fabric.
Picayune is located about 45 miles east of New Orleans. Flights into Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans or Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport in Gulfport, Miss. can accommodate attendees flying in for the event.
