According to a SI report on July 3, Chestnut has demolished the competition for the last seven years at the annual 4th of July throw-down, and is once again the favorite to take home the trophy in 2014. Yes, leave it to Las Vegas, but you can actually wager on this professional eating contest.
Bovada sports book has Chestnut as the overwhelming favorite to win once again. As a matter of fact, Chestnut is such a huge favorite, he really wouldn't be worth wagering on unless you were a millionaire. Chestnut is listed at -1200 to win tomorrow afternoon, meaning you have to wager $1200 to win $100.
On the other hand if you wagered on any other of the contestants, Bovada has a field bet of +700, meaning you win $7 for every $1 you wager. Those are much better odds. There is a reason Chestnut is such a big favorite though - this guy can eat! Last year he devoured a record 69 hot dogs, beating his own record of 68 he set the year before.
Of course this contest isn't limited to just the men. There will be a handful of women battling it out for the ladies title as well. The women in tomorrow's contest will have their hands full when they try to dethrone the three time champion Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas.
The women have only been competing at Coney Island since 2011, and Thomas has been crowned the champ all three times. Last year Thomas won her third straight title by eating 36 and 3/4 hot dogs. Overall 13 women and 17 men will compete Friday before an estimated crowd of 25 to 30 thousand. What better way to start your 4th of July party, right?
If you can't make it to Coney Island, NY first hand, you can catch all of the hard core food action live nationally on ESPN News and streaming live online through ESPN 3 and Watch ESPN starting at 12 p.m. ET.
