The Mummers will march in any kind of weather. They are a dedicated bunch who parade up Broad Street in Philadelphia on New Years Day. What is not so dedicated is their fans. The parade route was sparsely populated. In some areas along Broad Street and around city hall, there was no one there at all. Even some sections of the bleachers were empty.
Several reasons for this, first is the cold. While the temperature was a balmy 35 or so degrees, it can get to you, especially, if you are in one place standing still. Next are the ungodly gaps in between bands. Sometimes, the wait is 20 to30 minutes with nothing in front of you. The last reason is the lack of food. Sure, around city hall, there were an abundance of food carts that jacked their prices double on New Years Day. There used to be chicken and hamburger stands along Broad Street. They were gone . People get hungry and want to eat.
For those that watched, it was a delight. from the fancy's and comics to the string bands. The results are Murray with 7830. Good timers next with 2880 and third place goes to Landi with 1900. Fancy Division first place went to Golden Sunrise with 1673 and second went to 1388 Hog Island.
Spring Bands top three were Quaker City with 95.95 points, Hegeman 93.60 and with 93.05 points is South Philadelphia. Fancy results have not been announced. Inside the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the seats were full for the fancy which put on a heck of a show. SEE THE SLIDESHOW.
