On July 17, 2014, MTV announced the nominations for its 31st Annual MTV Video Music Awards, which will be held Aug. 24, 2014, at The Forum in Los Angeles. MTV will telecast the ceremony live.
Among the nominees are Fifth Harmony, whose video for "Miss Movin' On" is up for the prize of Artist to Watch. Fifth Harmony came in third place on "The X Factor" U.S. in 2012. The other nominees in this category are Sam Smith's "Stay With Me"; 5 Seconds of Summer's "She Looks So Perfect"; Charli XCX's "Boom Clap"; and Schoolboy Q's "Man of the Year."
Meanwhile, Kelly Rowland's "Dirty Laundry" has been nominated for Best Video With a Social Message. The other nominees in the category are Angel Haze featuring Sia's "Battle Cry"; Avicii's "Hey Brother"; Beyoncé's "Pretty Hurts"; David Guetta featuring Mikky Ekko's "One Voice"; and J. Cole featuring TLC's "Crooked Smile."
Rowland was a judge on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2011 and on "The X Factor" U.S. in 2013. Ironically, her "Dirty Laundry" song and video includes lyrics of Rowland confessing about her past jealousy of Beyoncé, who used to be in Destiny's Child with her. Rowland and Beyoncé are now facing off as nominees in this MTV VMA category.
Speaking of Beyoncé, she leads the list of nominees, with eight nominations. Hip-hop stars Iggy Azalea and Eminem are close behind, with seven nominations each.
Former "X Factor" U.K. boy band One Direction, which won MTV VMAs in 2012 and 2013, was completely snubbed for MTV VMA nominations in 2014. One Direction's videos for "Story of My Life," "Midnight Memories" and "You & I" were eligible but failed to score any nominations.
One Direction was also initially snubbed for nominations at the 2013 MTV VMAs, but after an outpouring of complaints from fans, MTV "conveniently" added a new category: Best Song of the Summer. One Direction's "Best Song Ever" was nominated and won. One Direction was at the ceremony to pick up the award, but the group got a considerable number of people booing in the audience during One Direction's acceptance speech.
One Direction came in third place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2010. Since then, the group has become the biggest-selling act to emerge from "The X Factor." According to Sony Music, One Direction has sold 45 million singles, albums and DVDs worldwide, as of July 2014.
